Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital Charitable Fund

While many people already carry a donor card, the NHS Organ Donor Register is the most secure way of potential donors making their wishes known. It can be quickly accessed 24 hours a day to see whether an individual has registered a willingness to be an organ donor. It can literally be a lifesaver.

Right now more than 9,000 people in the UK need an organ transplant that could save or dramatically improve their lives. But each year around 400 people die while waiting for a transplant. Help us to give these people the chance for a new life.

26 Jan Video from the walk can be seen on the You Tube page.

19 Jan I made it to Harefield!

16 Jan I was delighted to learn that the Government has announced it will back the recommendations of the Organ Donation Taskforce, which could see a 50 per cent increase in organ donation in the UK within five years - resulting in an additional 1,200 transplants a year and saving thousands of lives. I look forward to finding out the full details of the report 'Organs for Transplants' which is published today.

13 Jan I welcome today's announcement by Gordon Brown of a review of the current organ donation system.
My intention with this walk is to provide people with an opportunity to discuss their wishes with their familly and sign up to the current Organ Donor Register. This discussion needs to take place regardless of whether we have an opt-in or opt-out system.
Fundamentally I believe more needs to be done to raise awareness about organ donation in order to bring the issue to everyone's attention. I hope the Organ Donation Taskforce will take this into account in their review.

 Welcome To 16jan.co.uk Minimize

At 4pm on 16 January 2008 I left my office in Crawley, and set off for Harefield Hospital in Middlesex - the exact time and date as the previous year.

On that occasion I was driven (at speed) and underwent a heart transplant in the early hours. Thanks to the generosity of my donor and their family AND the expertise of the staff at Harefield I am now fit and well enough to do the journey on foot (at a somewhat slower speed!)

With tremendous support from management and colleagues at Xafinity I am hoping my walk will raise a lot of interest in the NHS Organ Donor Register AND a lot of money for the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital Charitable Fund.

The Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust has a world-wide reputation for the diagnosis and treatment of heart and lung disease and treats patients from across the UK. I am fortunate to have been under their expert care for more than 30 years. Most people visiting this site will know someone with heart trouble. Please help me to support the Trust that does so much for so many of us.

Thank you. Russell White.
